Riverhelm has never, in its many years been conquered by invaders. Riverhelm's first defense is it's high walls. The towering structure rises far to high to climb or scale. The walls team with high skilled archers itching for a challenge. The city's only entrance and exit is but 2 gates that are one after another. The steel-iron gated gates are opened and closed from above the walls contain a long (almost valley like cavern), that is blocked by the second gate. If one was to make it past the first gate, they would be stopped by the second, having arrow fire rain down on the invaders. The third line of defense are the Knights of Riverhelm, and Guards of Riverhelm. The Guards of Riverhelm serve the Jarl and city faithfully, willing to fight and die protecting their home and its people. The Knights of Riverhelm are the elite soldiers who've proven their worth, and have become the mustle of the the Riverhelm Legion.

Knights of Riverhelm: It is said that when a warrior of Riverhelm becomes a knight, they are reborn in the fires of combat and emerge like the dragon that lies on their chest. The Knights of Riverhelm are the elite warriors of Riverhelm are sent to protect it's people when all else fails. Knights are only bound to their own order and only commanded by the Jarl himself. Unlike the guards of the city, Riverhelm Knights are allowed to leave for their own adventures and journeys in order to assist the people in any way, and with greater freedom. A knight is highly respected as well as feared for they have achieved the highest rank a warrior can achieve in the city. Independent and steadfast, they are not given a salary by the city but instead will often times charge for their services (at a decent price). Once again, though they are independent they are bound to serve the Jarl at first sign of trouble as his personal guard and private army. The knights are also bound by a strict code of honor:
Always honor the Divines
Love your spouse and family
Defend the people of Riverhelm at all cost
Never steal nor harm the innocent
Serve your Jarl above all else

Never steal nor harm the innocent
Serve your Jarl above all else

Guards of Riverhelm: The guards that protect the city of Riverhelm are highly skilled soldiers that are willing to risk their lives for the safety of their home. There are 3 main types of guards that protect the city. The different guards are called known as Riverhelm Archers, Riverhelm Soldiers, and Riverhelm Linemen.
Archers: Archers of Riverhelm are known for their great skill in combat in terms of using ranged weapons. Almost unmatched compared to the other territories, an archer is known to easily hit a target from 50 feet away. Archers are not heavily protected but they are skilled combatants in terms of daggers and evasion. They carry chain-mail as well as cloth bearing the Riverhelm Crest. They are also known to wear masks or wrapped cloth around their faces and mouths for protection from wind and their identity (besides also looking very cool).
Linemen: Line men are sole melee combatants who are very skilled in both sword and shield combat as well as two handed weapon combat. It is not unheard of that a Line's men will stand with his brothers and take on hordes of enemies while never moving a muscle backwards. They They wear heavier armor that is more than other guards but not nearly as strong and well made as the Knights of Riverhelm. It would not be wise to pick a fight with a Linesmen at the local pub... they have friends.
Soldiers: The soldier is the most common guard as well as the main form of military unit for the Legion. They are often time trained in many styles such as: sword/sword&shield/ranged&archery. Soldiers are usually handling the grunt work and are often times the most respected out of the guards and legion, next the the knights. They are loyal and train hard, yet the requirements are much lower (leading to why there are so many of them). Soldiers stick with medium armor and weapons preferring protection as well as mobility.
